Porcelain Tile in Bathrooms

The short answer

Porcelain is a denser, less absorptive ceramic — under 0.5% water absorption — which is why it works in showers and on floors where ordinary ceramic does not. Large-format porcelain needs a flatter substrate than standard tile.

What porcelain actually is

Porcelain is the default surface in a modern bathroom for one unglamorous reason: it absorbs almost no water. That single property is what lets it sit on a shower floor for twenty years without degrading, and it is why the choice between porcelain and ceramic stops being a matter of taste the moment the tile goes inside the wet area.

It is also the material where the gap between the tile and the installation is widest. A large-format porcelain tile is unforgiving of a substrate that a smaller tile would have hidden, and most of the porcelain failures we are called to look at are flatness and coverage problems rather than tile problems.


Porcelain is a ceramic fired at a higher temperature from a finer, denser clay body. The industry definition is a water absorption rate at or below 0.5% by weight, measured under ANSI A137.1. Ordinary ceramic sits well above that. That is the whole difference, and everything else follows from it.

Because the body is dense rather than porous, porcelain does not need a glaze to keep water out — which is why through-body and colour-body porcelain can be chipped without exposing a pale clay underneath. It is also why porcelain is harder to cut and drill than ceramic, and why a fabricator charges more for a niche shelf in porcelain than in ceramic.

Most of what is sold as "wood-look" or "marble-look" tile is porcelain with a digitally printed surface under the glaze. The print quality is genuinely good now; the thing to check is how many distinct faces are in the run. A tile with four faces will visibly repeat across a bathroom floor. Twelve or more will not.

What it measurably does

Numbers where numbers exist. The third column is the part a spec sheet leaves out — why any of it should change what you choose.

Where it belongs — and where it does not

The section manufacturer literature never includes, and the one worth reading before you commit to a surface.

Shower floorIdeal
Low absorption plus an adequate DCOF rating is exactly what a shower floor needs. Specify the slip rating explicitly — this is the one location where a polished finish is the wrong answer regardless of how it looks in the showroom.
Shower wallsIdeal
Large-format porcelain on shower walls means fewer grout joints, which means less to clean. The constraint is substrate flatness, not the tile.
Bathroom floorIdeal
Durable, dimensionally stable, and unbothered by the water that leaves a shower on someone’s feet. Heated floor systems sit under it without complaint.
Tub surroundWorks well
Same case as shower walls. Watch the transition detail where tile meets the tub deck — that joint moves and needs flexible sealant, not grout.
Vanity topWith conditions
Porcelain slab vanity tops exist and are excellent, but they are a different product from tile and need a fabricator who works in porcelain specifically. Tiled vanity tops with grout joints around a sink are a maintenance problem we would talk you out of.
CabinetryNot recommended
Not a cabinetry material. Listed only because tile cladding on vanity bases turns up in inspiration photos and does not survive contact with a real household.

What it will actually ask of you

“Low maintenance” is not maintenance information. These are the tasks and the intervals.

Routine cleaningWeekly
Neutral pH cleaner and water. Porcelain itself needs nothing special — the tile is not the part that stains.
Sealing the tileNever
Porcelain does not absorb water, so it cannot absorb sealer either. Anyone offering to seal your porcelain tile is selling you a service the material cannot use. Grout is a separate question.
Sealing cementitious groutAnnually, if you used cementitious grout
The grout is porous even when the tile is not. Epoxy grout removes this task entirely at a higher installation cost and more difficult repair later.
Squeegeeing the wallsAfter each shower
The film that builds on shower tile in this area is mostly soap scum rather than mineral scale, because the treated supply here is soft. Thirty seconds with a squeegee removes it before it establishes; no cleaning product removes it as easily afterwards.
Checking change-of-plane jointsAnnually
Where wall meets wall and wall meets floor, the joint should be flexible sealant. If it has been grouted instead, it will crack — that is movement, not bad workmanship in the tile itself, and it is worth catching before water gets behind.

Honestly: the case for and against

What it does well

  • Absorbs ≤0.5% water, which is what makes it viable in a shower at all
  • Never needs sealing — the tile is inert
  • Available in large formats that cut down grout joints and cleaning
  • Through-body and colour-body options hide chips rather than showing pale clay
  • Works over radiant floor heat without special provision
  • Print quality on stone-look and wood-look tile is genuinely convincing now

What to weigh against it

  • Demands a flatter substrate than smaller or softer tile — the prep is the cost
  • Harder to cut, so niches, curbs and penetrations carry more labour
  • Polished finishes can fall below the slip threshold a shower floor needs
  • Low-quality runs repeat their printed faces visibly across a floor
  • Grout, not the tile, remains the maintenance item unless you pay for epoxy
  • A cracked tile in the middle of a floor is a genuinely awkward repair

What goes wrong, and what to do instead

Failures we find in finished work with this material, not hypotheticals.

  • Specifying a polished porcelain for a shower floor because it looked right on the sample board

    A surface that is slick when wet and soapy, in the one place in the house where a fall is most likely and least survivable.

    Instead: Ask for the DCOF figure before selecting, and hold shower floors to 0.42 or above. Smaller tile on the shower floor also adds grout joints, which add grip — this is the one location where more grout is an advantage.

  • Running large-format tile over a substrate nobody checked for flatness

    Lipping at the tile corners that catches the light across the whole wall. It cannot be fixed by grouting and it cannot be fixed later without removing the tile.

    Instead: Check the substrate with a straightedge and correct it before any tile is set. On a wall that needs it, that means floating the surface flat — a real line item that some bids quietly omit.

  • Treating mortar coverage as something to judge by eye after the fact

    Voids under the tile in the wettest part of the room. The tile cracks under point load months later and nobody connects the two events.

    Instead: Back-butter large-format tile as well as combing the substrate, and pull a tile early in the day to check coverage. Once a floor is grouted, no one can tell you what is underneath it.

  • Grouting the corners instead of using flexible sealant

    Cracked lines at every change of plane within a year or two, which read as poor workmanship and are an entry point for water.

    Instead: Every change of plane gets a flexible sealant joint colour-matched to the grout. This is a specification detail, not an upgrade, and it is worth confirming it is in the scope.

  • Choosing bright white grout in a wet area on well water

    Iron in well water stains light grout permanently. Not "needs scrubbing" — permanently.

    Instead: On a private well, get a current water test and choose a mid-tone grout. On the treated municipal supply here the calculation is different and light grout is defensible, because there is very little mineral content to deposit.

Porcelain on local water and in local housing stock

The maintenance advice porcelain usually comes with assumes hard water, and around here that assumption is mostly wrong. Placer County Water Agency reports hardness averaging 21.75 mg/L as calcium carbonate for the Foothill/Sunset system serving Rocklin and Loomis — about 1.3 grains per gallon — and states in the same report that this is soft water. San Juan Water District publishes 23.6 mg/L for Granite Bay and tells customers they have no need for a softener.

That has a practical consequence for tile selection. The white mineral film people expect to fight on shower walls barely forms on this supply. What does form is soap scum, which is an organic residue and comes off with a squeegee rather than an acid cleaner. It also means lighter grout in the wet area is a defensible choice here in a way it would not be in a hard-water market, and that acidic descaling products — which will etch some stone and dull some finishes — are largely unnecessary.

Two exceptions matter. Roseville blends groundwater with its Folsom Lake supply and runs harder than its neighbours, so the conventional advice applies more closely there. And private wells through the Loomis Basin and the rural parcels around Auburn and Granite Bay are independent of all of this: iron is the dominant problem, it stains light grout permanently, and it is the one situation where we would steer you firmly toward a mid-tone grout and a coated finish.

The housing stock shapes the installation more than the selection. Almost everything built in Rocklin, Lincoln and west Roseville since the late 1980s is slab-on-grade, which is a flat and stable substrate and the easiest case for large-format tile. The older stock around Old Roseville, Auburn and parts of Sunset Whitney sits on raised foundations, where deflection between joists becomes a real constraint: a floor that flexes underfoot will crack a large tile eventually regardless of how well it was set. That is a structural assessment we make before specifying tile size, not after.

Questions we are asked about porcelain tile

Is porcelain actually better than ceramic, or is that a sales line?

It is a real material difference with a published threshold. Porcelain absorbs 0.5% water or less by weight under ANSI A137.1; ceramic absorbs considerably more. Inside a shower that difference determines whether the tile is an appropriate material at all. On a dry wall outside the wet area, ceramic is genuinely fine and cheaper, and we will say so.

Does porcelain tile need to be sealed?

No. Porcelain is dense enough that it cannot absorb a sealer any more than it absorbs water, so sealing it accomplishes nothing. Cementitious grout is porous and does benefit from sealing roughly annually. If you would rather never think about it, epoxy grout costs more to install and eliminates the task.

Why is large-format tile more expensive to install?

Almost entirely because of substrate preparation. A large tile cannot conform to a surface that is out of plane, so the wall or floor has to be made flat first, and that is real labour that a smaller tile would have hidden. The tile itself is often no more expensive per square foot. If a bid for large-format tile does not mention flattening the substrate, that is the question to ask.

Can I put porcelain tile over my existing bathroom floor?

Sometimes, and it depends on what is under it and how much height you can afford to lose. Over a sound slab, usually yes. Over an existing tile floor, it is possible but adds height at the door and at every transition, and it hides whatever condition the old installation is in. On a raised floor we want to see the subfloor before agreeing to it, because deflection is what cracks tile.

What slip rating should I ask for on a shower floor?

A DCOF of 0.42 or above is the accepted threshold for level interior surfaces expected to be walked on wet. Ask for the figure specifically — it is published for every tile, and a polished porcelain that looks superb on a sample board can be well under it. Smaller tile on the shower floor also helps, because the extra grout joints add texture.
