Porcelain vs. Ceramic Tile

The short answer

Porcelain absorbs under 0.5% water and belongs on floors and in showers. Ceramic is cheaper and easier to cut, and is fine on walls outside the wet area. In a shower, the difference is not cosmetic.

The two options

This is the one tile comparison where the answer is genuinely determined by a published number rather than by taste. Porcelain is defined by water absorption at or below 0.5% by weight under ANSI A137.1; ceramic sits well above it. Everything else follows from that.

It is also frequently presented as a straight upgrade, which it is not. Ceramic is a perfectly good material in the right place, it is cheaper, and it is easier to cut — which matters more than people expect on a job with a lot of intricate work.

Option A

Porcelain

A denser ceramic fired at higher temperature, defined by water absorption at or below 0.5% under ANSI A137.1.

Right for

  • Shower floors and shower walls, where absorption decides whether the material is appropriate at all
  • Bathroom floors, including over radiant heat
  • Large-format installations where fewer grout joints are the point
  • Anywhere you want through-body colour so a chip does not expose pale clay

Wrong for

  • Budgets where the substrate preparation it demands has not been costed
  • Intricate cuts and curves, where its hardness costs real labour hours
  • Dry accent walls, where the extra cost buys nothing

Option B

Ceramic

A more absorbent, softer-bodied tile, typically glazed, which is why the glaze is doing the waterproofing work rather than the body.

Right for

  • Walls outside the wet area, where absorption is irrelevant
  • Powder rooms and dry bathrooms with no shower
  • Decorative and handmade tile, where the character is the point
  • Projects where cutting complexity is high and labour is the larger cost

Wrong for

  • Shower floors, where the absorption difference stops being cosmetic
  • Bathroom floors in a household that will be hard on them
  • Large formats, which the softer body handles less reliably

Use porcelain anywhere water lands — shower floor, shower walls, bathroom floor — and use ceramic freely on dry walls where it is cheaper, easier to cut and available in characterful ranges porcelain cannot match. Inside the wet area this is not a preference, it is a material property.

Choose porcelain when
Choose porcelain for every surface in the wet area without exception, for the bathroom floor, and wherever you want large-format tile with minimal grout joints. Also choose it if you want a chip to be invisible, which through-body porcelain delivers and glazed ceramic cannot.
Choose ceramic when
Choose ceramic for dry walls outside the shower, for powder rooms with no shower at all, and where a decorative or handmade range is the whole point of the design. Also consider it where a job involves unusually intricate cutting, since the labour saving is real and the exposure is not.

What changes this decision here

Foundation type shapes it more than most people expect. Almost everything built in Rocklin, Lincoln and west Roseville since the late 1980s is slab-on-grade — flat, stable and the easiest possible case for large-format porcelain. The older raised-foundation stock around Old Roseville, Auburn and the foothill corridor is a different conversation: deflection between joists is what cracks a large tile eventually, and it is a structural assessment we make before specifying tile size rather than after.

The soft water here removes one argument that is usually made for porcelain and leaves the real one intact. Mineral scale barely forms on this supply, so the "porcelain is easier to keep clean in hard water" case does not apply. What does still apply is absorption, and that has nothing to do with water chemistry — a ceramic body in a shower floor is the wrong material whether the water is soft or hard.

On private wells through the Loomis Basin, Penryn and rural Nevada County, iron staining pushes the decision toward porcelain for a different reason: grout colour choice becomes constrained, and the fewer grout joints a large-format porcelain installation carries, the less surface there is to stain permanently.

Questions this raises

Is porcelain just expensive ceramic?

No — it is a defined material difference with a published threshold. Porcelain absorbs 0.5% water or less by weight under ANSI A137.1; ceramic absorbs considerably more. Inside a shower that determines whether the tile is appropriate at all. On a dry wall outside the wet area, ceramic is genuinely fine and cheaper, and we will tell you so.

Can I mix them in one bathroom?

Yes, and it is often the sensible answer. Porcelain everywhere water lands, ceramic on a dry feature wall where a handmade or decorative range gives you character porcelain cannot reproduce. That is a deliberate specification rather than a compromise, and it usually costs less than running porcelain everywhere.

Why does large-format tile cost more to install?

Almost entirely substrate preparation. A large tile cannot conform to a surface that is out of plane, so the wall or floor has to be made flat first — real labour that a smaller tile would have hidden. The tile itself is often no more expensive per square foot. If a bid for large-format does not mention flattening the substrate, that is the question to ask.

What happens if a ceramic tile chips in a shower?

The glaze is what was keeping water out, so a chip exposes an absorbent body directly to the wet area. It is not an emergency — the waterproofing behind the tile is the actual barrier — but it is why we do not specify ceramic there. A through-body porcelain chip exposes more of the same material and is often barely visible.

Does the slip rating differ between them?

The rating is a property of the finish rather than the body, so both are available in slip-rated versions. The practical difference is range: porcelain is manufactured in far more finishes that meet the wet-area threshold. Ask for the DCOF figure on anything going on a shower floor and hold it to 0.42 or above, whichever material is proposed.
