Curbless, low-threshold, and what the difference costs you
A walk-in shower is the default in almost every bathroom we build now, and for good reason: it is easier to use, easier to clean, and it makes a small room feel larger than any other single change. It is also the part of a bathroom most likely to fail, because it is the only assembly in the house that is deliberately soaked every day.
The visible parts of a shower — the tile, the glass, the fixtures — are the parts homeowners choose between. The parts that decide whether it is still sound in fifteen years are all behind them: the substrate, the slope, the waterproofing membrane, and how that membrane is detailed where it meets a corner, a niche, a bench or a drain.

A walk-in shower is any shower you enter without stepping over a tub wall. Within that, there are two meaningfully different things, and the distinction is structural rather than decorative.
A low-threshold shower keeps a small curb, usually two to four inches. The shower floor sits at or slightly above the surrounding floor, and the curb holds water in. This is buildable in essentially any house, on any floor construction, without touching the structure.
A curbless shower has no curb at all. The shower floor is recessed below the surrounding floor so water runs to the drain without a barrier to stop it. Achieving that means lowering the substrate: cutting and re-pouring a recess in a concrete slab, or modifying and re-sheathing the joists in a raised floor. Which of those you are facing depends on how your house is built, and it is the first thing worth establishing, because it shapes the budget more than any finish decision will.
A third pattern sits between them — a wet room, where the shower has no enclosure at all and the whole bathroom floor is waterproofed and sloped. It works beautifully in the right room and is a maintenance liability in the wrong one.
Honestly: the case for and against
What it does well
- Nothing to step over, which removes the single highest-risk movement in a bathroom
- Far easier to clean — no tub ledge, no door track, no curtain, and on a curbless floor no curb to scrub
- Makes a small bathroom read as larger, because clear glass lets the eye travel the full depth of the room
- Accommodates a bench, a hand shower and grab bars without looking clinical if they are planned from the start
- Continuous floor tile running into a curbless shower removes the visual break at the entry entirely
- Suits every age in a household equally, which very little bathroom design manages
What to weigh against it
- A genuinely curbless entry depends on your floor construction, and that constraint is not negotiable with budget
- Frameless glass is the item most often underestimated in a shower budget
- Open showers without doors lose heat, which matters more in an unheated foothill bathroom in January than people expect
- More surface area than a tub-shower means more grout to maintain, particularly with smaller tile
- Waterproofing quality is invisible at handover, which makes competing bids genuinely hard to compare
Who this is genuinely right for
- Anyone intending to stay in their home long term
- A curbless entry with blocking already in the walls is the cheapest form of future-proofing available, and it costs almost nothing extra at the time the room is being built anyway.
- Small and awkward bathrooms
- Removing a tub deck and swapping an opaque curtain for clear glass changes the perceived size of a cramped room more than repainting, relighting or reflooring it will.
- Primary suites being reworked
- Where an unused corner tub is being removed, the combined footprint usually allows a shower large enough for two heads, a bench and a genuinely comfortable layout.
- Households where somebody has reduced mobility
- A step-free entry, a bench at the right height and properly anchored bars restore independence in a way a tub bench never does — and none of it has to look like medical equipment.
What actually drives the price
Ranked from largest to smallest. We do not publish price figures, because a number without your room attached to it is a guess that anchors you to the wrong expectation. What we can tell you is where the money goes.

How the work actually runs
Establish what your floor will allow
Before anything else, we determine whether a curbless entry is feasible in your house — slab or raised floor, joist direction and depth, where the drain currently sits. This answer shapes the design, so it comes first rather than after selections.
Design and complete selections
Tile, drain type, glass specification, valve layout, bench and niche positions are all decided together, because they constrain each other. A linear drain and large-format tile are one decision, not two.
Protection, demolition and discovery
Pathways covered, dust barrier at the doorway, everything out to bare studs and subfloor. What is behind the wall gets photographed and shared with you before it is covered again.
Structure, plumbing and blocking
Any recess for a curbless entry is formed here. Supply and drain lines are set, the valve is placed at a comfortable height, and solid blocking goes in behind the tile at bar and bench positions whether or not a bar is being fitted now.
Inspection
Rough plumbing is inspected before it is concealed where the work is permitted. Nothing is covered until it passes.
Slope, waterproofing and flood test
The base is built to fall correctly toward the drain, backer board goes up, and a continuous bonded membrane is applied across base and walls and detailed at every corner, niche, bench and penetration. The assembly is flood-tested before a single tile is set.
Tile, grout and movement joints
Tile is set in mortar appropriate to its format, laid out so cuts fall where they are least visible, then grouted. Movement joints go at changes of plane and at the perimeter, where they belong.
Glass template, fixtures and walkthrough
Glass is templated against finished tile, fabricated, and installed. Fixtures follow. Then we walk it with you and write the punch list from what you see, not what we see.
What goes wrong, and what to do instead
These are failures we find in finished work, not hypotheticals. Most of them are invisible on the day the job is handed over.
Choosing large-format tile with a centre point drain
A point drain requires the floor to fall toward it from every direction. Large tiles cannot follow compound slopes without lippage, ponding, or being cut into small pieces that defeat the reason for choosing them.
Instead: Pair large-format floor tile with a linear drain so the floor slopes in a single plane. Decide the drain and the tile together, because one determines the other.
Sloping only above the waterproofing layer
Water that passes through grout sits on a flat membrane instead of draining. The shower develops a persistent smell that cleaning never fixes, because the water is under the tile.
Instead: Ensure the fall to the drain exists beneath the waterproofing, not just in the tile above it. Every durable assembly handles this; ask which one is being used.
Treating a niche as a decorative afterthought
Niches are cut into the wall after framing and waterproofed as an exception rather than as part of the system. They are the most common leak origin in an otherwise sound shower.
Instead: Locate niches during framing, between studs and clear of plumbing, and waterproof them as an integral part of the membrane with the back sloped very slightly to drain.
Attempting a curbless entry without lowering the floor
Water leaves the shower. It reaches the bathroom floor, the door threshold and eventually the framing or the room below. This is the failure that turns a shower into a construction claim.
Instead: Either recess the substrate properly or build a low threshold. A curb two inches high is a good shower; a fake curbless entry is a leak with a schedule.
Ordering glass off framing dimensions
Frameless glass is unforgiving. Panels ordered before tile is set arrive with visible gaps, need packing out, or have to be remade at cost.
Instead: Template after tile. The wait is a few days and it is the difference between glass that looks fitted and glass that looks approximate.
Undersizing or badly ducting the exhaust fan
A walk-in shower puts far more moisture into the room than a tub does. Without adequate extraction it condenses on paint, grout and cabinetry, and mould follows.
Instead: Size the fan to the room and duct it properly — short runs, correct diameter, rigid where possible, terminating outside. Duct quality matters as much as the rated airflow.
What decides whether curbless is feasible here
Whether a curbless shower is feasible in your house is largely decided by when and where it was built. Most Rocklin, Roseville and Lincoln subdivisions from the 1990s onward are slab-on-grade, and a slab is the more predictable case: the recess is cut and re-poured, the work is contained, and the outcome is knowable in advance. Older Auburn homes and many Loomis and Granite Bay properties on raised foundations are the more variable case, because feasibility depends on joist direction, depth and span under that particular bathroom.
Second-storey bathrooms are their own consideration. In two-storey homes across Whitney Oaks, Stanford Ranch and the newer Roseville tracts, a curbless entry means working within the depth of an engineered floor system that has limited tolerance for notching. It is often still achievable, but it is a question to answer before the design is settled rather than during demolition.
Water chemistry shapes material choices here more than most people expect. Municipal supply across Rocklin and Roseville is hard enough to leave visible scale on glass and fixtures, and much of the Loomis Basin and the rural parcels around Auburn and Granite Bay run on private wells where iron content will stain light grout permanently. Both facts argue for darker grout in the wet area, a coated rather than living brass finish, and glass treated at fabrication. These are decisions made at selection time; none of them can be retrofitted.
Ventilation deserves particular attention in the foothills. Older Auburn and Meadow Vista bathrooms frequently have an original fan that is undersized for a walk-in shower, ducted through a long flexible run into an unconditioned attic. In winter that combination puts warm wet air into a cold space and produces condensation in the duct itself. Replacing the fan without correcting the duct fixes very little.
On permits: any shower that alters drain configuration or moves a valve requires one. Rocklin, Roseville, Lincoln and Auburn each permit through their own city building departments; Granite Bay and other unincorporated addresses go through Placer County. Recessing a slab or modifying floor framing brings structural review into scope as well. We pull the permit and schedule inspections as part of the project.
Questions we are asked about this
How much space does a walk-in shower need?
Less than most people assume for a workable shower, and more than they assume for a comfortable one. A standard alcove footprint of roughly 60 by 32 inches makes a perfectly good single shower and is what most tub conversions produce. Adding a bench, a second head or genuine turning room for a wheelchair changes the requirement substantially. Rather than work to a minimum, we lay out the room to see what is actually available — in a primary suite where an unused tub is coming out, that is usually much more than expected.
Is a curbless shower going to leak?
Not if the floor is recessed properly and the waterproofing is continuous. A correctly built curbless shower is no more prone to leaking than any other, because the water still drains to a drain — it simply has no barrier in its way. Curbless showers that leak are almost always ones where the floor was never lowered and the design relied on slope alone to keep water in. That is not a curbless shower; it is an open shower with an optimistic drainage plan.
Do I need a shower door, or can it be open?
A fixed panel with an open entry works well in a larger shower and is easier to clean than a hinged door, because there is no seal and no track. The trade-off is heat: an open shower loses warmth quickly, which is noticeable on a cold morning in an Auburn or Meadow Vista bathroom in a way it is not in a well-insulated Roseville home. If you like a hot shower and your bathroom runs cold, a door is worth the cleaning.
What is the best tile for a shower floor?
Porcelain with a slip rating appropriate to a wet floor, in a format that suits your drain. With a linear drain, large-format tile works because the floor slopes in one plane. With a centre point drain, the floor falls in four directions and you need small tile or mosaic to follow it. Natural stone is beautiful and needs sealing on a schedule; if nobody in the house will do that, choose porcelain and enjoy it instead.
How do I stop the glass from spotting?
It depends which water you are on, and the answer around here surprises people. The treated supply through Rocklin, Loomis and Granite Bay is soft — PCWA publishes roughly 1.3 grains per gallon — so what you are seeing on the glass is mostly soap scum rather than mineral scale. A squeegee used after showering is the single most effective response and it costs nothing. Factory-applied glass treatment specified at fabrication is worth having and far outlasts anything applied to installed glass. A softener is the wrong tool on this supply, because there is very little hardness to remove. If you are on a private well, or on a supply that blends groundwater, then hardness genuinely is the cause and a softener is worth costing.
Can a walk-in shower work in a small bathroom?
It is usually the best thing you can do to a small bathroom. Removing a tub deck recovers real floor area, and replacing an opaque curtain with clear glass lets the eye reach the back wall, which changes the perceived size of the room more than any decorating decision. Carrying the same floor tile through a curbless entry extends the effect further, because there is no line where the floor stops.
Do I need a permit for a walk-in shower?
If the work alters plumbing — and converting to a walk-in shower nearly always does — then yes. Recessing a slab or modifying floor framing for a curbless entry adds structural review. Permits go through your city building department in Rocklin, Roseville, Lincoln or Auburn, and through Placer County for unincorporated addresses including Granite Bay.
