The two options
This is usually presented as an aesthetic choice and it is mostly a structural one. Whether a curbless shower is available to you is decided by your foundation, not your budget, and that answer exists before any design is drawn.
The second thing worth saying plainly: curbless is far less forgiving to build. A curb contains water even when the fall is imperfect. Remove it and the slope, the waterproofing and the drain position have to be right, because nothing else is holding the water in.
Option A
Curbless
The shower floor is recessed below the surrounding bathroom floor, so there is no step and no threshold to cross.

- Anyone who expects to stay in the house as they age
- Households where someone already finds a threshold difficult
- Slab-on-grade homes, where recessing the floor is routine rather than structural
- Small bathrooms, where removing the visual barrier makes the room read considerably larger
Wrong for
- Raised-floor homes where joist depth or direction makes the recess impractical
- Projects where the waterproofing budget has been cut, because this detail is unforgiving
- Bathrooms where the only realistic drain position leaves a long, awkward fall
Option B
Curbed
A raised lip contains the water, which is the traditional detail and by some distance the more forgiving one to build.
Right for
- Raised-foundation homes where recessing the floor means structural work
- Tighter budgets, where the money is better spent on the waterproofing assembly itself
- Older houses where floors are out of level and a curb absorbs the discrepancy
- Any project where containment matters more than appearance
Wrong for
- Anyone planning to age in the house
- Households where someone is already unsteady
- Small bathrooms where the curb visually chops the room in half
Our recommendation
Stated up front, with the conditions attached. A comparison that will not commit is not decision support.
Go curbless if your foundation allows it and the budget covers doing the waterproofing properly. It is better to live with, considerably safer, and it makes a small room feel larger. Choose curbed without hesitation where the structure makes a recess impractical, or where going curbless would mean economising on the assembly behind the tile.

What decides this locally
Foundation type splits our territory almost geographically. Almost everything built in Rocklin, Lincoln and west Roseville since the late 1980s is slab-on-grade, where recessing a shower floor is a known piece of work — cut, re-pour, waterproof — and curbless is a straightforward conversation. That covers a large share of the bathrooms we are asked about.
The older stock is a different answer. Old Roseville, Auburn, Colfax, Nevada City and the foothill corridor sit largely on raised foundations, where the recess has to come out of the floor structure and feasibility depends on joist direction, depth and span beneath that specific bathroom. On the Nevada City and Cedar Ridge hillside houses, under-floor access can vary within a single building. We get underneath before designing around the answer, because it is the difference between a straightforward detail and a structural project.
Sun City Lincoln Hills deserves a specific mention. A large share of the accessibility work we do is there, the houses are single-storey slab construction, and the original builder tub-shower is exactly the configuration a curbless conversion improves most. Adding blocking for grab bars at the same time costs very little while the walls are open and is expensive to retrofit — if ageing in place is any part of the reason for the project, do both at once.
One mountain note. In Truckee and the Tahoe basin, a curbless entry interacts with floor build-up for radiant heat, which is far more common there than in the valley. Both raise the finished floor, and they need resolving together during design rather than sequentially.

Can I have a curbless shower in my house?
It depends on your foundation more than your budget. On slab-on-grade — most of Rocklin, Lincoln and west Roseville since the late 1980s — recessing the shower floor is routine. On a raised foundation it depends on joist direction, depth and span under that specific bathroom, and it can range from straightforward to genuinely structural. We establish which you have before designing around the answer.
Will water escape onto the bathroom floor?
Not if it is built correctly, and that qualification is doing real work. A curbless shower relies on a properly recessed floor, consistent fall to the drain and waterproofing that extends beyond the shower into the surrounding floor. Done to standard it contains water reliably for decades. Done to budget, it is the detail that fails first — which is why we would rather build a good curbed shower than a compromised curbless one.
Is a linear drain necessary for curbless?
Not necessary, but it usually helps. Because a linear drain is a line rather than a point, the floor can fall in a single direction instead of four, which makes large-format tile far easier to lay flat and the fall less noticeable underfoot. On a wide curbless shower it is often the difference between a floor that looks flat and one that visibly dishes.
Is curbless worth it if nobody has mobility issues now?
Usually yes, for two reasons. The obstacle you remove is the one most associated with bathroom falls, and that risk arrives gradually rather than announcing itself. And doing it later means rebuilding the shower entirely — this is not a change that can be retrofitted. If the walls are open now and the structure allows it, now is dramatically cheaper than later.
What if the budget will not stretch to both curbless and good waterproofing?
Then build a curbed shower with excellent waterproofing. That is the honest answer and it is not the one that sells a bigger job. A curb is forgiving of an imperfect fall; remove it and the assembly behind the tile is the only thing keeping water in the room. Economising there to afford the look is the worst of both, and it is a failure that surfaces a year later in the room next door.
