Tub-to-Shower Conversions

The short answer

A tub-to-shower conversion removes an existing bathtub and builds a waterproofed shower in the same footprint. It is the highest-value bathroom project for most homeowners: roughly two weeks on site, no layout change, and no plumbing relocation in most Rocklin-era homes.

What a tub-to-shower conversion actually involves

Almost every house in Placer County has a bathtub nobody uses. It is usually in the hall bathroom or the primary suite, it gets cleaned more often than it gets filled, and it takes up about fifteen square feet of a room that has none to spare. Converting it to a shower is the single highest-value change most homeowners can make to a bathroom, and it is also one of the least disruptive.

The reason it is good value is structural rather than cosmetic. A standard alcove tub occupies a 60-by-30 or 60-by-32 inch space with plumbing already in the wall at one end and a drain already in the floor. A shower built in that same footprint reuses both. Nothing moves, no walls come down, and the work stays inside one room.

The reason it is worth doing properly is that a shower is a far more demanding assembly than a bathtub. A tub is a single moulded vessel that holds water by itself. A shower is a system of substrate, waterproofing, slope, drain and tile that only holds water if every layer is right. That difference is where conversions go wrong, and it is invisible until it is expensive.


The tub comes out, along with the surround and the wall substrate behind it, back to bare studs. The tub valve is usually replaced with a shower valve at a comfortable height, and the drain is adapted from a tub drain to a shower drain — a change of fitting, not a change of location, in most cases.

From there it is new construction in a small space: a sloped and waterproofed shower base, a bonded waterproofing membrane across the base and up the walls, tile over the top of that, a glass panel or door, and the fixtures. The finished result sits in the same opening the tub came out of.

Two variants exist. A low-threshold conversion keeps a small curb, typically two to four inches, and is straightforward in almost any house. A curbless conversion drops the shower floor below the surrounding floor so there is no step at all — better to live with, better for accessibility, and dependent on what is underneath your bathroom floor rather than on your budget.

Honestly: the case for and against

What it does well

  • Reuses the existing plumbing location, which is the largest single cost saving available in any bathroom project
  • Typically the shortest bathroom project on site, because no layout changes and no structural work are involved
  • Recovers usable floor space — a shower without a tub deck feels considerably larger than the same footprint
  • Removes the highest-risk movement in the bathroom: stepping over a 15-inch tub wall onto a wet surface
  • Far easier to clean than a tub-shower combination, with no ledge, no track and no shower curtain
  • Can be built to be accessible from the outset without looking clinical, which is much cheaper than retrofitting later

What to weigh against it

  • Households with small children generally need at least one tub somewhere in the house
  • A curbless entry is not always feasible without modifying the floor structure, which changes the scope

A step-free or low-threshold shower with proper blocking in the walls is dramatically cheaper to build now than to retrofit after a fall or a diagnosis.
Owners of 1990s and 2000s primary suites
The oversized corner soaking tub in Stanford Ranch, Whitney Oaks and Fiddyment Farm homes is the most consistently unused fixture we find. Reclaiming it usually transforms the room.
Anyone whose bathroom feels cramped

Ranked from largest to smallest. We do not publish price figures, because a number without your room attached to it is a guess that anchors you to the wrong expectation. What we can tell you is where the money goes.

How the work actually runs

  1. Selections, before anything is demolished

    Tile, glass, valve, fixtures and drain all get chosen and ordered before demolition starts. This is the single largest cause of delay in a bathroom project — a shower that is waterproofed and waiting on tile is a room you cannot use and we cannot finish.

  2. Protection and demolition

    Floors and pathways get covered, a dust barrier goes up at the doorway, and the tub, surround and substrate come out to bare studs. We photograph what is inside the wall before anything is covered again.

  3. Plumbing and any framing corrections

    The valve is set at shower height, the drain is adapted, and anything found in the wall gets addressed. Blocking for a grab bar or a future bar is installed here — it costs very little now and requires opening the wall later.

  4. Inspection

    Where the work is permitted, the rough plumbing is inspected before it is covered. This is a gate, not a formality: nothing goes back on the wall until it passes.

  5. Substrate, pan and waterproofing

    The base is built and sloped to the drain, tile backer goes on the walls, and a continuous bonded waterproofing membrane is applied over the base and up the walls, detailed at every corner, niche and penetration. On the assemblies we use this layer is flood-tested before tile.

  6. Tile, grout and seal

    Tile is set with a mortar appropriate to its size and format, laid out so that cuts land where they are least visible, then grouted and finished. Movement joints go where they belong rather than where they are convenient.

  7. Glass, fixtures and walkthrough

    Glass is measured against the finished tile — not before — then fabricated and installed, followed by the fixtures. We walk the finished shower with you and build the punch list from what you notice.

What goes wrong, and what to do instead

These are failures we find in finished work, not hypotheticals. Most of them are invisible on the day the job is handed over.

  • Treating tile as the waterproofing

    Tile and grout are not waterproof. Water passes through grout routinely and travels along whatever is behind it. Without a continuous membrane it reaches the substrate and the framing, and the first symptom is usually a smell or a stain on a ceiling below, years later.

    Instead: Insist on a named, continuous bonded waterproofing system, applied over the base and up the walls and detailed at every corner and penetration. Ask which system, and ask to see it before it is covered.

  • No pre-slope under a traditional pan liner

    Water that penetrates the tile sits on a flat liner instead of draining. The shower develops a persistent smell long before it visibly leaks, and no amount of cleaning fixes it because the problem is under the floor.

    Instead: Ensure the base slopes to the drain beneath the waterproofing layer, not just above it. Modern bonded systems handle this differently from traditional liners — either is fine, but the water has to have somewhere to go.

  • Leaving the valve at tub height

    The shower works, but the controls sit awkwardly low forever, and the only way to change it afterwards is to open the finished wall and retile.

    Instead: Move the valve while the wall is already open. It is a small line item during the conversion and a significant job at any other time.

  • Skipping grab-bar blocking because nobody needs one yet

    A grab bar anchored into drywall or tile without solid backing will not hold a falling adult. Adding blocking later means removing tile and reopening the wall.

    Instead: Install solid blocking behind the tile at bar height and at the bench during framing. It costs almost nothing, it is completely invisible, and it means a bar can be added in an afternoon whenever it is wanted.

  • Choosing glass before the tile is finished

    Frameless glass is fabricated to the measured opening. Ordering it against framing dimensions rather than finished tile produces gaps, forced fits, or a panel that has to be remade.

    Instead: Template the glass after tile is set. It adds a short wait to the schedule and it is the reason a frameless enclosure sits properly.

  • Removing the last bathtub in the house without thinking about it

    A house with no tub at all is a harder sell to families with young children, and it is a decision that is expensive to reverse.

    Instead: If this is your only tub, talk it through before demolition. Often the right answer is to convert this one and keep or add a tub in the secondary bathroom.

Why this conversion recurs in the local housing stock

The single most common conversion we see in Rocklin and Roseville is the 1990s and 2000s primary suite: an oversized corner soaking tub with a tiled deck, a small separate shower beside it, and a cultured-marble vanity. The tub is almost never used, the shower is too small to enjoy, and the two together consume the whole wall. Removing the tub and building one properly sized shower in the combined footprint is usually a better room than anything achievable by keeping both.

In hall bathrooms across Lincoln, Loomis and newer Roseville, the standard is a 60-inch alcove tub-shower with a fibreglass surround. These are the most straightforward conversions available — the footprint is standard, the plumbing is where you expect it, and the result is predictable.

Auburn is the exception, and we budget for it differently. The housing stock is older, and opening a bathroom wall in a pre-1970s foothill home routinely reveals out-of-plumb framing, galvanised supply lines at the end of their service life, or drain venting that no longer meets current code. None of this is a disaster, but pretending it will not happen is how a project goes over budget in week one. We plan for discovery on older homes rather than hoping.

On permitting: Rocklin, Roseville, Lincoln and Auburn each issue permits through their own city building departments, while Granite Bay and other unincorporated addresses go through Placer County. A straight like-for-like fixture replacement generally does not require a permit, but a conversion that relocates or alters plumbing does. We pull it and schedule the inspections as part of the project.

One material note specific to this area. Much of the Loomis Basin and the rural parcels around Auburn and Granite Bay are on private wells, and well water with high iron or hardness will stain light grout and etch some finishes faster than treated municipal water. If you are on a well, that should influence grout colour and metal finish at selection time, not after.

Will removing my bathtub hurt my resale value?

Only if it is the last tub in the house. Buyers with young children generally want at least one bathtub somewhere, and a house with none narrows that pool. If you have a tub in another bathroom, converting this one is widely considered an improvement rather than a loss — a well-built walk-in shower is a selling point, and an unused tub is not. If this is your only tub, the usual answer is to convert this bathroom and keep a tub in the secondary one.

Can I have a curbless shower in my house?

It depends on what is under your bathroom floor, not on your budget. A curbless shower needs the shower floor recessed below the surrounding floor so it drains without a barrier. On a concrete slab that means cutting and re-pouring a recess. On a raised floor it means modifying the joists, which depends on their direction, depth and span. We can usually tell you which situation you are in during the in-home consultation, and it is one of the first things worth establishing because it shapes everything else.

Do I need a permit for a tub-to-shower conversion?

Usually yes. California requires a permit for work that moves or alters plumbing, and a conversion changes the drain configuration and typically the valve. A straight like-for-like fixture swap does not. Your permit goes through your city building department in Rocklin, Roseville, Lincoln or Auburn, or through Placer County for unincorporated addresses such as Granite Bay. We handle the application and the inspections.

How long will my bathroom be out of use?

A tub-to-shower conversion is typically the shortest bathroom project we do, because the footprint does not change and no structural work is involved. The schedule is driven by three things: whether all your materials are on hand before demolition, inspection availability in your jurisdiction, and how long the glass takes to fabricate once it is templated against finished tile. We give you a scope-specific schedule in the written proposal rather than a number over the phone, because a number over the phone is a guess.

Can you build it so I can add grab bars later?

Yes, and you should. We install solid blocking behind the tile at grab-bar height and at any bench during framing. It is invisible, it costs very little while the wall is open, and it means a bar can be mounted properly in an afternoon at any point in the future. Without it, a bar anchored into tile and drywall will not hold an adult who is falling, which is the only moment it matters.

What is the difference between a shower pan and a tiled base?

A pre-formed pan is a single moulded piece — acrylic, solid surface or similar — that arrives already sloped and waterproof. A tiled base is built on site: sloped substrate, bonded waterproofing membrane, then tile. A pan is faster, cheaper and has fewer failure points. A tiled base can be any size or shape, is required for a genuinely curbless entry, and looks considerably better. Neither is wrong; a pan in a standard alcove is a perfectly good decision.

Will a shower make my small bathroom feel bigger?

Usually, yes, and by more than the floor area suggests. Removing a tub deck recovers usable space, and replacing an opaque curtain or a framed door with clear glass lets you see the full depth of the room instead of stopping your eye at the tub. Carrying the same floor tile into a curbless shower extends that further, because there is no visual break at the entry.
